Updated November 29
Here at AFP we have continued to experience unprecedented increases in manufacturing, ingredient, transportation, and labor costs. These industry-wide cost increases have accelerated in the recent months and are anticipated to remain at elevated levels. As a result of these cost increases, we are announcing an 16.5% price increase across our portfolio of products. These price increases will be effective February 1, 2022.

April 2022 Update
We continue to experience unprecedented supply chain challenges that prevent us from meeting the current marketplace demand for our products. The recent Omicron surge has greatly impacted our suppliers’ ability to produce the ingredients and packaging materials necessary to meet demand for our products. Staffing shortages in their plants are the root cause of this particular challenge. While these staffing shortages due directly to Omicron have subsided, the labor market for manufacturing remains extremely tight and our suppliers are working to catch up from lost production. We currently do not have a firm date when we will be back in full supply. This is due to the unprecedented nature of the current global supply chain situation.

June 2022 Update
We continue to make significant progress as it pertains to identifying solutions to our ingredient challenges. We are hopeful to have clarity regarding those solutions in the coming weeks. Full implementation of these solutions will likely not be realized until the fall of 2022. Please know we are working diligently to get back into supply as quickly as possible. We will communicate any potential changes to our tentative timeline.

In order for our new automated packaging equipment to handle this significant increase in volume, we had to slightly modify our overwrap to a "saddle bag" where there are 2 Snack'n Waffles separated by a perforation, which can be easily separated by tearing along the perforation

April 3 Update
In an effort to continue to be transparent, we wanted to provide an update regarding our new Snack'n Waffle "saddle pack" packaging, which again was a design that was implemented to handle the substantial increase in supply from our new line over the last few months

July 2022 Update
As I mentioned in my prior emails (see below), we received some initial complaints regarding the perforation between the waffles with our new "saddle bag" packaging and we're happy to say we heard you! Our outstanding operations team worked quickly to address the perforation issue and the waffles are now very easy to separate with no tearing of either package as you can see in this short video here. Snack'n Waffles have always been the same fantastic product, which is why we made the packaging fix a huge priority especially ahead of this upcoming school year!

In terms of Snack'n Waffle capacity, we continue to make all our waffles from scratch and have more than tripled production over the last 9 months. We still have plenty of room to expand further, so we do not foresee any issue with supply going forward. We wanted to mention this since availability of IW breakfast items seems to be very sparse especially with the premium quality and convenience of Snack'n Waffles.

We are very grateful for your support and look forward to continuing our partnership!

On Sunday evening, a fire broke out at the rendering section of JBS’s beef plant in Grand Island, Nebraska. On a Facebook post, JBS stated, “As of this time fabrication and slaughter A and B shift will not be working September 13, 2021."
The facility has an estimated daily capacity of 5,500 to 6,000 head per day and employs about 2,800 people. Industry sources estimate today’s cattle slaughter at 113,000 head. The fire that reportedly started late Sunday in the rendering area of JBS's Grand Island, Neb., beef processing facility remained burning 12 hours later, according to media reports. The rendering operations apparently are a total loss.

But operations at the plant, which were suspended on Monday, are expected to resume Tuesday, according to a statement by the company.

By Monday the blaze was dubbed a six-alarm fire. A report quoting the Associated Press said the fire continued burning inside of walls and ceilings in the plant. No injuries have been reported, and no cause for the fire has been determined.

April 2022 Update
Recent world events are affecting our business in various ways.  Our supply channels are under renewed stress of raw material shortages which invariably leads to price increases.
We have been forced to adjust our prices on Cod and European Lakefish in order to help our suppliers stay competitive in accessing the raw material to keep the production going for us.
Sanctions and duty barriers are changing the established supply pattern making it very difficult to forecast the supply, but we continue to do what we can to keep our customers with product.
We thank you for your patience and understanding in dealing with this situation.

May 31 Update
Dear Customers and Sales Team:
We are issuing a new pricelist that seeks to adjust to the rising costs of products that are directly associated with the effects of the sanctions against Russia.  The already stressed out supply chain has been further compromised by these sanctions.
 Lake fish
In the Lake fish category we have lost the supply of Russian Lake Perch. All there is left to work with is what can be procured in Estonia, probably less than half of the normal supply.  We started to adjust for that already in April, but it was not enough, buyers in Europe and here are scrambling for their share of the reduced supply.
 Cod
On Cod we have a situation where US, Canada and UK have banned the direct import of Russian Cod. The latest round of sanctions in Europe now also prohibits Russian transport vessels from discharging in Norway and EU ports and shipping out from Russia in containers has become increasingly difficult with major shipping companies cancelling Russian ports. Getting raw material to China is taking twice the time it took before. This all happened at a time where the main landing season was pretty much over in Norway and the result has been a dramatic rise in the value of Cod raw material for processing. With the European buyers competing for supply of Cod in Norway, Iceland, Greenland and Canada, processors in the rest of the world are left to compete for the Russian Cod. Add to that the news that Russian vessels are now landing more of their catch in Russia.  Import of fish and seafood to Russia has stopped and there is now a need to have supply from their own fisheries in the months to come.  That means less available for the world market. We do not expect to see this situation improve, neither on supply nor on price of that material.  It may very well get worse.

Our supply partners in China are doing all they can to keep us supplied, but they are having problems with accessing enough raw material for ongoing production. It means that we shall have inconsistent supply of Cod products in the months to come.  The escalation of prices is severe, but as long as we are willing to pay what it takes to get supply, we shall have products coming.

We are doing the best we can,  paying the cost to be competitive in our procurement,  so that we can serve your needs best possible. We have been able to restock Iceland FAS Cod Fillets 16/32 oz packed 2x20 lbs and look forward to servicing your needs on that again. The price on that item was pushed up by the strong demand in the UK where import of Russian FAS product was subject to a 35% duty and now will be banned.

Haddock
On a positive note, we have been able to reduce the price of our IQF Haddock Fillets and Loins and look forward to our customers take advantage of good supply of Haddock.

Salmon
Our Salmon prices remain unchanged for June, but replacement is costing us more so there will be a price increase in July. June will be a good time to stock up for the summer.

We value your loyalty and your business and thank you for being patient with us.

Sincerely,
Terje Korsnes
President

We are seeing significant challenges with appointments and service from our third party cold storage providers. This industry has been extremely impacted with staffing shortages. Most are operating far fewer dock doors than they have available. This is reducing the available appointment times each day. We are encouraging and stressing all customers provide at least 15 business day lead time on orders.

Due to unprecedented challenges in the labor market, we have made the difficult decision to delay future production of Foodservice croissants in order to fulfill the needs of our other key products. This decision was not taken lightly as we know it will impact our loyal customers. However, it was with the customer in mind that we have come forward with this new plan of action, which will lead to improvement on our fill rates on muffins, layer cakes, sheet cakes, and cheesecakes. We expect to see service improvement across these product lines in August with recovery in September. We are actively looking to backfill labor and pursuing other ways to provide Foodservice croissants as quickly as possible.

Remember we use “NO” Russian caught or processed fish in our products.  As well as a reminder – not all items labeled “Pacific Cod” or Pollock can make this statement, but we can at Trident Seafoods.

Alaska Pollock
2022 A season production was better than expected and we did see at the end of the season some unexpected IQF production which was very nice to see.  This has allowed us to build some of our inventory on this key item.   We are looking forward to B season starting in a few weeks and to be able to continue to build our inventory’s with IQF Fillets, Block & Surimi.

Alaska Pacific Cod
We currently have our Shatter Pack Cod available for shipment out of New Cold and we have 8-16, 16-32 & 32up available for immediate sell.  I do not anticipate these being available after June so please get your orders in now as the next Fishery does not open until September. However, most of the shatter pack (around 80%) is traditionally put up in A Season, so there will not be much available from B Season.

Commodity Oils Market Update
The year 2021 has continually shown surprising and unprecedented volatility and has made the year adventurous for traders as well as customers. It is looking like the new year will also provide firm pricing and some product tightness. The Canola crop harvest was very short which will limit supply and put pressure on other oils to make up for the shortfall. The Government mandates for biofuels may have a large impact on Soy Oils in the future. The supply of Cottonseed will remain weak for the upcoming and the supply of all High Oleic Oilseeds will remain extremely tight for the pack-year. Traders are uncertain of how the markets will react in the coming months based on the many unknown factors which impact costs. We do know that supply and demand will be closely monitored by Suppliers and that prices will not be returning down to historic levels any time soon.
